Hello World!

Since launching in January, we’ve connected with tons of amazing customers via email, social networks, and even the old fashioned telephone. Our goal for this blog is to provide a more intimate look inside PostalPix for our customers and anyone else who is interested (partners, suppliers, evil wizards, etc).

For those that don’t know us yet, we currently make an iPhone app that lets you order premium photo prints of any image on your device. Prints are shipped to your front door and arrive in as little as 2 days. You can find more information about our service and products at PostalPix.com.

Our New Baby: PostalPix v1.5

Today, we’re excited to announce the release of PostalPix v1.5.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new:

• Sleek and intuitive new design
• Addition of 5×7 and 5×5 square print sizes (great for Instagram prints)
• Aluminum prints – yes, we now print your photos on metal! (4×4, 5×7, and 8×10 sizes)
• Pay with Paypal
• Quantity limit increase to 60 unique images for iPhone 4 and 3GS devices
• Select up to 50 copies of each image
• A lot of behind the scenes improvements
• An overall enhanced customer experience

The Customer Experience

The last bullet above brings me to an important topic. Our #1 goal at PostalPix is to deliver the best possible experience for our customers. We function as a tech company, but customer service is what’s at our core. We truly believe that this mindset has been the driving force behind our growth as a young startup.

Every point of contact we have with you is a chance to make a lasting impression. That may even mean sacrificing short-term profits for a long-term gain. I’ll elaborate more on this in a future blog post.

Price Changes to 4×4 Prints

There were problems with how our 4×4 square prints were priced in the last version of PostalPix. First, the tiered pricing structure was confusing. Second, we priced 4x4s too low for high quantity orders and were barely breaking even at times. We created a new pricing format to solve these issues:

New 4×4 square print pricing Old 4×4 square print pricing
First 3 prints: 99¢ total First 3 prints: 99¢ total
Each additional print: 29¢ each Prints 4 – 20: 29¢ each
Prints 21 or more: 21¢ each

The new structure increases pricing by 8¢ per 4×4, but only for prints 21 and up. Just the prints after 20 were discounted to 21¢ in the old structure.

After a lot of number crunching, we think this new structure is the optimal balance of keeping our prices low (e.g. keeping customers happy) while maintaining profitability (e.g. staying in business). A few cents more per print may sound like we’re nickel and diming, but this can really add up collectively across all our customers. Feel free to sound off on this topic in the comments below.

What’s Next

The PostalPix iPhone app is just the beginning (pardon the cliché). You can expect availability on more devices, new features, and neat new products in the near future.

We’re excited about the future of PostalPix and hope you’ll tag along with us for the ride!

P.S. If you’re a current PostalPix customer, what do you think of the service thus far? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

I’m excited about the 5×5′s. I have already ordered approximately 300 prints from you already. I will be using these for a photo exhibition at my church in the near future.
Thanks a lot for your service. I love PostalPix!!!

Completed my first Postal Pix order last week and I LOVE it. I have what might be a strange suggestion. I’d actually love to see some smaller print options… like 3×3 or 2×2. I’m going to be using these prints to scrapbook some iPhone photos, and the smaller prints would allow for a cool grid layout. Keep up the good work!

    • postalpix

Hi LeeAnne – you may have already noticed, but we launched 2×2 prints in our latest app update!

  • http://www.herhodgepodge.com Lorean

So if I want to print out more than 60 unique photos, do I have to place separate orders and then pay shipping for each separate order? Seems like a great app, but I’d hate to have to pay shipping several times!

    • http://postalpix.wordpress.com Michael

Hi Lorean. Yes, we currently limit orders to 60 unique photos each. We set this limit to ensure the app doesn’t crash during the upload process, which uses a big chunk of the iPhone’s memory. We’re always working to increase this though. The new iPhone coming out should give us some more flexibility in this area as well!

  • Kathleen Loughran

I agree with Lee Ann. I would love to see 2×2 and 3×3 sizes. I also would live to see sizing for photo strips for the photobooth app pics.

Thanks for making phone photography convenient. As a mom of two 2 and under I need all the help I can get.

  • michaudliz

Hey is this available for the ipad2 as well?????
Also – please please please make this available in canada!!!!

    • http://postalpix.wordpress.com Michael

Yes, our existing iPhone app is compatible with the iPad 2 (no iPad-optimized app yet though). Sorry, we’re working on getting to Canada! Would you mind filling out the international request form on our homepage (http://postalpix.com)? We’ll keep you posted!

  • rae

Any idea on when there will be an app for droid? I keep checking to see, but no luck so far haha.

    • http://postalpix.wordpress.com Michael

We’re hoping soon Rae! It’s definitely on our list of things to do in the coming months. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact timeline. We keep you posted though.

  • Kelsey Oh

I’ve only just discovered Postalpix in the last two weeks, and I made my first order the same day I found this app, I was that excited. However, I am a very frequent Instagram Life Chronicler, and I wish to print off tons of the 675 photos I already have posted on there…which brings me to wonder why there’s a 65 prints per order limit? Just curious…

Also, I am way excited to see what new products and services you guys may offer in the future! Thanks so much for sharing!

(I found your app link via webstagram, in case this interests you business-wise)

    • http://postalpix.wordpress.com Michael

Thanks for stopping by Kelsey. We set a limit of 60 photos to ensure the iPhone doesn’t crash during the upload process. Uploading is very memory intensive, and we found 60 is a good benchmark to limit instability. We’re working on increasing that soon though!

  • Julie

I was confused as to why some of my iphone pics would seemingly not work for the square printing option. Almost every time I selected a photo from my libaray, a message popped up indicating that cropping would significantly change the pic, so consider the standard size. What’s the point of having the squares as an iphone option if it won’t work?

    • http://postalpix.wordpress.com Michael

Hi Julie. We offer the square size for photos that are already cropped into a square (before entering our app). A lot of popular apps do this, including Instagram and Hipstamatic. If you select a standard, rectangular photo from your camera roll, one dimension will be cropped so it fits on the square print. In the future, we’ll offer the ability to choose which part of the picture gets cropped. For now, we simply “auto-crop” the photo in one direction. If you check out the preview in the cart, it’ll show you exactly how the image will be printed.
