Tangible Memories with Instagram Photo Prints

Tangible Memories with Instagram Photo Prints 1

Nothing is worse than hanging on to hundreds (admit it, maybe even thousands) of Instagram shots and never printing out any of them. We won’t stand for it! We’re firm believers that moments with your favorites are fleeting and there’s no better way to remember them than by printing out those photos. Luckily for us, we have some insanely talented folks out there championing the movement to make memories tangible by printing out Instagram photo prints.

Meet blogger and photography (just to name a couple of titles, she’s actually a Super Mom), Hillary of Life on Sugar Hill blog. Her creative style and eye for attention lends to her colorful and easy going way of capturing some of the best moments with her family. Seriously, how lucky are we that she’s a PostalPix user? She’s been kind enough to not only blog about us on Life on Sugar Hill, but also to share her world on our blog today.

What are your passions? What inspires you

  • I am passionate about people. relationships, memories, and all of the little details of life that fill the cracks. This is why I love photography so much… a great picture captures more than just an image, it captures a feeling. From a sparkle in the eye, a precious moment between little ones, hands holding, or even the delicious pancakes you ate for breakfast. Our memories can only hold so much, pictures help us remember along the way.

Tell us more about your blog, photography and how PostalPix has played a role in your life.

  • As long as I can remember, I’ve had a camera in my hand. first it was my parents Polaroid, soooo many disposable cameras in high school (man, was waiting on that film to be developed so exciting), then I got my very own digital camera and shortly after, a cell phone with a camera (what?!). I’ve since upgraded along the way and learned so much about photography. I’ve happily found my sweet spot as a lifestyle photographer + I have my blog and my kiddos to thank for that! our life as a family inspires me to continue documenting life, even as it gets more full.

Sadly, since the switch from film cameras to digital, you see a lot less printed photos… they get uploaded to Facebook, your blog, IG, or whatever social media platform gets the glory for you + that’s the end of it. I was guilty of this too! When I discovered PostalPix, it was a game changer. I made myself a promise to get tangible! I got organized + got printing, thanks to awesome prices, an easy-to-use app, and an even easier delivery method… straight to my mailbox? Please and thanks! I’m seriously so thankful for companies like PostalPix, who help us make preserving our memories a priority!

The Only Two Apps You Need to Make Travel Friends

I’ve had a love affair with traveling for as long as I can remember. It hit a fever pitch in college, when I spent 5 months studying and traveling in South America.

It was the trip of a lifetime. There was, however, one recurring issue I ran into. Making friends in new places was often difficult, especially if I only stayed for a short amount of time.

Now, over 6 years later, I use two apps to avoid this problem:

  • HelloTalk: This brilliant app connects you with native speakers of a language you’d like to learn, who also want to learn your native language. It’s like a chat app, but with built-in translation features. I’ll explain how I use it to find friends before I travel to a new country.
  • PostalPix: Yes, our own app! I use it to mail prints of my iPhone and Instagram pics to my new friends after I leave their city. It’s a great way to stay in touch. Receiving real photo prints in the mail is a lot more meaningful than sending them by text, email, WhatsApp, etc.

Finding Friends Before You Visit

Wouldn’t it be great to have friends waiting for you in a city or country before you visit? Of course it would! There’s no better way to experience a new culture than with a local.

A month or so before visiting a city, start using HelloTalk to find friends there by using the custom search feature. After creating a free account, you can find the custom search area by tapping the looking glass icon in the upper right corner of the Search tab:

HelloTalk Custom Search_CR3

Enter your destination in the “search by city” field and select a language you’d like to learn in the “native” field. I like to leave “nationality” blank because you’ll miss out on people who immigrated there and still speak the local language. This is especially true in Latin America, where the local language is almost always Spanish.

HelloTalk results and convo 2

After searching, you’ll see a list of local users that meet your criteria. Simply find language partners that look interesting and start conversions with them. A basic greeting in their language is all you need to get things started (i.e. “Hi, how are you?”).

Remember that the primary goal of HelloTalk is language learning, so no need to write something charming or witty. Be courteous to your partners and help them with their language learning to whatever degree they’d like.

After getting to know your language learning partners through messaging and/or calling (HelloTalk has free voice calls), you’ll get a feel for who would make sense to meet with in person.

Always be cautious and use common sense when meeting up with people offline! It’s a good idea to meet for the first time in a public area with plenty of people around. If you’re weary of meeting with someone solo, you can also organize a group gathering with a few of your language partners. HelloTalk makes this easy with their group chat feature, which you can access at the top right corner of the main conversations screen.

Friends meeting

Keeping In Touch After Departing

Unfortunately, the time will come when you have to leave your new friends and return home. Aside from continuing to communicate though HelloTalk, I like to use an unconventional method to stay in touch: Sending photo prints in the mail with PostalPix!

Chances are you snapped a lot of photos with your phone when you were visiting, hopefully some of which included your new friends. Rather than texting or emailing the photos, you can use PostalPix to send real prints to your friends in the mail. We can print and ship any photo from your iPhone, Android, or Instagram account.

PostalPix prints and recipients 2

All you have to do is download PostalPix, select the photos you’d like to send, and enter the address of your friend. You can even duplicate your order and send it to multiple recipients at the same time.

Address formats can vary in certain countries, so make sure you confirm how to write it in a way the local post office will understand.*

You’ll be amazed at how excited your friends are when they receive prints in the mail. Think about it. How often do you open your mailbox and find something meaningful, like personal photographs? Probably not often, which is why it’s sure to make someone else’s day.

What’s Next

Hopefully this guide makes it easier to meet people when traveling and stay in touch with them afterwards. Now you have no excuse not to scratch that travel itch, especially for a quick solo trip.

So what are you waiting for? Download HelloTalk and PostalPix (both available on iPhone and Android) and start planning your next trip today!

*As of now, PostalPix only mails to US addresses. International mailing is in closed beta and should be available publicly soon. If you’d like to be notified when it releases, be sure to fill out this sign up form.

PostalPix + PicTapGo Photo App for iPhone

We first introduced PicTapGo photo app for iPhone back in November as one of our favorite photo apps to use. We are back today to show you how you can seamlessly go from editing to printing through PostalPix with just one button. There’s really no excuse not to print out those vacation photos you took this Summer. You can now have them in days (or earlier) after a trip.

Need a quick run-through of the app and how you can connect to PostalPix? Follow along and we’ll show you how plus share some tips we’re big fans of.

1. First make sure you have both apps downloaded. (Note: PicTapGo is currently only available for iOS) Once you’re ready to start editing, power up that bad boy.

2. Hit the “OK” to give PicTapGo access your photos. This is standard procedure and will allow you to save your edited photos onto your Camera Roll. PROTIP: If you accidentally hit the “Don’t Allow” you can always go into your phone settings and change this. No biggie!

3. Next is the tough part the “PIC” — you’ll have to decide on the photo you’d like to edit. This may be a scary task if have a ton to choose from, like most of us these days. PROTIP: iPhone makes it easy to make folders and this is the best time to use it! Make one of the photos you’d like edited so you’re not wasting time sifting through photos you don’t want to edit or print.

4. If you’re unfamiliar with PicTapGo, this is where the magic happens or the “TAP.” It’s insanely easy to edit your photos and apply as many filters as you’d like on them. Go subtle or go bold, the opportunity is endless. You can read about the editing process in a more thorough post we’ve written up here. PROTIP: Once you start finding what filters work for you, save it in a recipe! It’ll apply the same filters every time and save you so much hassle of going through each one again.

5. Enough editing, it’s perfect! Is it just us or do we spend a ridiculous amount of time tinkering with every button to make sure it’s just right? After you’re done, just hit “Go” on the top right hand corner and it’ll take you to this page. This is where you can save, email, share to social media and there you go — get on over to PostalPix!

6. Click on the “PostalPix Prints” icon and it should open up directly to our app. PROTIP: Get to know our app a bit! Register an account with us prior and set up your shipping information.

7. Select a print size and order directly from the folder of photos you’ve got saved on your Camera Roll. Check out, set up your shipping and you’re good to go!

Hopefully this clears up any confusion you may have had with the app or how it worked with the two apps teaming up. A huge thanks to our good friends at PicTapGo for creating such a fine app.

Chalk Painted Clothespins for Photo Prints DIY

Chalk Painted Clothespins for Photo Prints DIY 1

Since the invention of Pinterest, clothespins have really had a popular time and our chalk painted clothespins for photo prints DIY is just another one to add on to the many, many versatile things you can do with a clothespin. (Well, aside from pinning clothes, but who does that anymore?) Follow along for a quick DIY tutorial on these guys. Pretty self-explanatory but just in case you need some guidance.

  • PostalPix Instagram Prints
  • Clothespins (normal size)
  • Chalk Paint or Chalk Spray Paint
  • Old Newspapers
  • Chalk Pen or Metallic Sharpie

  • Gather up your clothespins from around the house (if you don’t have any, they are only a few dollars for a huge pack at Target or your local hardware store.)
  • You want to do this outside since you’ll be working with (spray) paint.
  • Lay out your clean clothespins on some newspapers or old magazines and leave clearance away from anything and everything. If you have a sensitivity to the smell of (spray) paint, a mask would be helpful too.
  • Thoroughly coat each side of the clothespin with paint and let dry for at least an hour on each side. This may take a few coats each time.
  • Let dry completely overnight and that’s it!

You’ll have a great surface (albeit, small) surface to write sweet little notes on. We recommend location or hashtags because it’s all the latest rage these days.

Square Album for Instagram Prints

Plum Umbrella Albums for Instagram Prints 1

Do we have a treat for our readers today! Emily recently shared with us on Instagram, a darling little square album for Instagram prints she used for her PostalPix photo prints. Little did we know, she not only makes them herself, but sells them on her Etsy page! We had to reach out to her to get more info and lucky for us, she shared a bit of her story to get to know her and the Plum Umbrella a bit more.

Tell us more about yourself! What do you do for a living? Where ya from?

  • My name Emily Schmidt and you can find me on Instagram at @theplumumbrella. I don’t have a blog, but my Etsy shop is theplumumbrella.etsy.com. I live in Raleigh, NC and I’ve worked at the Libraries at NC State University for 12 years. I’m the Conservation Lab Manager in the Preservation Department, where we repair books in the collection and keep them in working order. Often this means completely rebinding a book – removing the old cover and spine linings, sewing on new endsheets, reshaping and relining the spine, cutting and covering new boards. Sometimes we also just replace the spine piece or repair pages that are torn. It’s a pretty unique job and I love getting to use my hands everyday.

What are your passions? What inspires you?

  • I’m a very visual person, a lover of color and pattern. The right color combination can totally brighten my day and change my mood. Give me a teal next to lime green or a rich purple with a light blue. I’m inspired by bright, vibrant scenes as well as dark and moody ones. I could get lost for hours staring at a great pattern.

I’ve been learning the craft of bookbinding for 12 years. At my day job I repair books; at home I make them from scratch. There is a joy in crafting something from start to finish – envisioning how it will look and how it will function – and in the process of turning paper and fabric into a beautiful book where someone can tuck away their personal thoughts, dreams and memories.

My passion is combining my love of color and pattern with my love of bookbinding.

Tell us more about your project and your handmade journals!

  • In this digital age, we all have so many photos hanging out on social media, which is great for accessibility, but we lose the experience of holding our memories in our hands, on actual paper. Photo prints feel better. You can put them on your shelf. You can hand them to someone else.  You can flip through your experiences. You can tell a better story.

I make and sell 5” square photo books, along with other kinds of handmade journals. My hope is that these small photo books will offer a unique place to put those prints, either to keep for yourself or give as a gift for someone else. Capture the moments of a trip. Share priceless memories with a parent or grandparent. Keep pictures of your children each year and flip through to see them grow. Collect images from a relationship and give them to a loved one. Put your memories back into your hands.

The photo books are a non-adhesive bindings which allow the pages to lie flat with open. They hold 24 blank pages. They are sized to hold 4” square prints. I bind extra thickness into the spine to accommodate for the thickness of the prints when they are added later. You can attach your prints with photo corners or photo tape. Each book is designed to hold 24 photos to be attached to the front of the pages only. (Adding more than 24 photos will cause the book to expand).

My tip for attaching your prints using photo corners:
    • Lay your photo in place on the page.
    • Put a paper weight or other small, dense object in the center of the photo.
    • Lift each corner individually and slide on the photo corner.
    • Press the photo corner down to adhere.
    • Repeat on the other 3 corners.
